Nela Ochoa: Genetic Portraits

Miami, (March 12, 2009) - The Frost Art Museum at Florida International University will present Venezuelan artist Nela Ochoa: Genetic Portraits. The exhibit, opening April 17, 2009, will feature key pieces from Ochoa's oveure, including Materia Gris Incompleta/Gray Matter Incomplete.

Ochoa, a prolific and internationally recognized multi-media artist, works simultaneously and seamlessly in the areas of video art, sculpture, and performance to explore the genetic codes of human bodies. "The Frost is a wonderful venue in which to bring art, science, medicine and research together in a multi-disciplinary forum and spark intellectual discourse," said Dr. Carol Damian, director & chief curator of The Frost Art Museum.

Ochoa's interest in the human body has led her to work with medical images such as X-rays and MRI's, integrating them into videos, paintings and installations. Her most recent work has led her further into the body, where she explores the mysteries of DNA.

Among the many awards Ochoa has garnered, most prominently, she has received the Premio de Arte No-Objetal, Salón Arturo Michelena, Valenciam, 1987 for the video-installation INVERNADERO.

The Frost Art Museum opened its current 46,000-square-foot state of the art building in November 2008. Nearly 10,000 people have visited the The Museum in its new building since its opening. Admission to the museum is always free. Nela Ochoa: Genetic Portraits will be opening along with Because I Say So Sculpture from the Collection of Dennis and Debra Scholl and the Spring BFA show on April 17, 2009.
